Bridging Borders: Emerson ASB 2017
Our Program
For the 14th time since 1998, Emerson College’s Alternative Spring Break (ASB) program is bringing students together to realize their potential for civic engagement and civic action. What started as a week of immersive service is now also a yearlong leadership development and community engagement program led by students and staff advisers. This March, ASB participants will return to El Paso, Texas on the Juárez, Mexico border where previous ASB teams have formed strong bonds in the local community.
Some past ASB projects include:
- Restoring oceanic habitats in Niceville, Florida following the BP oil spill
- Maintaining grounds of Joshua Tree National Park in Joshua Tree, California
- Participating in a female youth empowerment project with the Oglala Lakota Sioux Nation in Eagle Butte, South Dakota
Our Plan
For the fourth year, our team will travel to the El Paso/Juárez border for spring break week. Our immersion program will focus on understanding the unique intersection of issues faced by border communities, including immigration policy, education, labor rights, and food justice. While in El Paso, we will engage with organizations working to address the short-term effects and underlying root causes of these issues. Some of this work includes hosting community-building events, maintaining a community garden working towards food sovereignty, preparing rooms at shelters for families transitioning out of detention, and providing meals and services to migrant farmworkers with few labor protections.
Our journey does not end after our week in El Paso. Upon our return to Boston, we reflect on our new knowledge and how to share it with the Emerson community. We engage the Emerson community in conversations about our time in El Paso, the people we meet there, and their stories of strength and resilience. This step is critical in order to continue building bridges between people, cultures, and our shared humanity.
Investing In Our Team
We need your help to accomplish our team's mission. Our total program cost this year is $14,740, and we hope to raise as much as $7,500 through this campaign. Funds raised will cover our team's transportation, food, and lodging costs. Your support is also an investment in the learning, growth, and development in each of us as students and engaged citizens.

Help turn our experience into a reality (:
¡Hola! Emerson's Alternative Spring Break group has now launched our Bridging Borders Campaign, GET EXCITED PEOPLE!!
This year our 11 member group is traveling to El Paso, Texas for the fourth year in a row in the hopes of addressing, understanding, and discussing topics surrounding immigration. In order to help make our experience a reality we must raise $4,500.00 in 29 days!!! We need all the help we can get.
Our first weekly goal is $1,500.00. We would like to achieve this in the next 7 days and with your help, we can!
Each member of our group has joined the team for reasons that are dear to them. On our campaign's page you can read the stories of the different individuals and why it is they have joined the ASB program. As mentioned above, immigration is not just something that affects humans outside our borders, instead it is a topic that is central to the fabric of American society. Below you can find a video of one of our members welcoming you to our campaign. We hope that you find it in your hearts to help us in our efforts to educate our communities and you share this info with as many people as you can reach. Thank you all!
